Where, When and
How to Apply
METU generally sends exchange students to partner universities at the beginning
of Fall or Spring semesters of each university each university. The academic year for US and Canadian
universities begins in August, for European universities in September
or October, for Australian and Japanese universities at the end of
February.
The initial step is to attend the meetings of SAO, during October,
which give information about exchange programs. The dates and places
of these meetings are announced on the department notice boards and
on the METU's main web site. Then, those who are interested in American, Australian, and Canadian universities should
apply to SAO until the end of November to go as an exchange student
for the Fall and/or Spring semester of the following academic year
to fill out an initial application. However, for Japanese universities application deadline is the third week of October. Together with an advisor from this Office, the student will select
the most appropriate program, for the student's cumulative grade point
average and his/her TOEFL or IELTS (or expected) scores.
Japanese universities may require TOEFL score; however, Australian universities require IELTS score.
Those who are interested in European Union Socrates/Erasmus student exchange programs should check the Erasmus web site (http://www.erasmus.metu.edu.tr/outgoing.htm)
At the second stage,
students consult with departmental advisor about the suitability of
the selected university's program. The Department must approve before
the student can participate in the program. At this point, the student
is given a form that must be signed by the Department Chair and by
the Dean. The relevant documents are prepared with the help of the
Study Abroad Office and sent to the Host
University.
Students applying
for exchange programs must have all documents ready to send by the
middle of January or by the first week of February, depending on the
university in the USA or Canada. However, for those who apply for the following Spring
semester, this deadline can be the end of March.
Students are generally
notified at the end of May or in June if they have been accepted by
the Host University. The Host University and the Host Department have
the right for final decision on any METU applicant.
